Umpire Guccione struck by foul, leaves game

PITTSBURGH — Home-plate umpire Chris Guccione left Wednesday’s game between the Pirates and D-backs at PNC Park after being struck in the mask by a foul tip during the first inning.

Pirates third baseman David Freese was batting with one out and the bases loaded in the first when he fouled off a slider from D-backs starter Rubby De La Rosa. The pitch bounced off the lower part of Guccione’s mask, stunning him.
