Notes: Smith looking for another world title opportunity

A few notes from around the boxing world:
British junior lightweight contender Stephen Smith (23-2, 13 KOs), who lost a unanimous decision in a mandatory shot against world titleholder Jose Pedraza on April 16 in Mashantucket, Connecticut, returns to the ring on Sunday in his hometown of Liverpool, England, on the undercard of the vacant cruiserweight title fight between Ilunga “Junior” Makabu and Tony Bellew (26-2-1, 16 KOs). Smith, 30, is hoping a win against Argentina’s Daniel Brizuela (28-5-2, 8 KOs), also 30, will propel him to another world title opportunity.
“I want to get another world title fight as soon as possible,” said Smith, whose brothers Callum and Paul are also on the card. “I am not getting any younger and I have shown I belong at that level so I want to stay at that level and be put straight back in at that level. If somebody offered me a world title fight next fight I would take it. My confidence hasn’t dropped and I didn’t take any negatives from the Pedraza fight other than the results. I learned a lot …
