Zimmermann may need to hit disabled list

DETROIT — The Tigers should know by the end of the week if Jordan Zimmermann will need to go on the disabled list for the right groin strain that knocked him out of last Sunday’s start against the Rays.
Zimmermann said Monday night he felt much better compared to when the injury occurred. He’ll try to throw long toss on Friday in Oakland, where the Tigers begin their six-game West Coast trip that envelops Memorial Day weekend.
If the long-toss session goes well, manager Brad Ausmus said, Zimmermann will likely try to throw a bullpen session Sunday morning. How he gets through that would determine whether he has a chance to start on the trip or will need to be replaced.
Zimmermann’s spot in the Tigers’ rotation was originally slated to fall on Saturday’s game in Oakland, but thanks to Thursday’s off-day, Detroit can move up Mike Pelfrey, Justin Verlander and Anibal Sanchez to start on their regular four days’ rest. …
