A look at the numbers: Jordan Zimmermann’s true value to the Tigers

DETROIT — By all accounts, the Detroit Tigers seemed relieved once they learned of starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann’s diagnosis: a Grade 1 groin strain, considered the mildest level of strain.

The team will be without the 29-year-old workhorse for his next slated start, which would have been Friday against the Oakland Athletics, but on Monday manager Brad Ausmus left open the possibility that Zimmermann could return to the mound for his next turn, thereby avoiding the disabled list.

It is no wonder the Tigers are heartened by this news: No other pitcher has been more instrumental to the team’s success than the Auburndale, Wisconsin, native, who inked a five-year $110 million deal with the team this winter.
