Vogelsong placed on DL with facial fractures

PITTSBURGH — A day after he was struck in the face by a 92-mph fastball, Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was placed on the 15-day disabled list with facial fractures.
The Pirates announced the roster move before Tuesday’s series opener against the D-backs at PNC Park, and they called up right-hander A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Vogelsong’s place on the active roster.
Vogelsong was carted off the field and sent to Allegheny General Hospital on Monday after Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles’ 0-2 pitch appeared to bounce off his batting helmet and strike him in the left eye or cheek.
