Cincinnati champs Guto & Saymon win again after 18-hour trek to Moscow

Moscow, Russia, May 24, 2016 – After winning their first-ever FIVB World Tour gold medals this past Saturday evening in the United States, young Brazilians Saymon Barbosa and Gustavo ”Guto”  Carvalhaes were back playing on the international Beach Volleyball circuit here Tuesday at the US$800,000 Moscow Grand.

“It was a long trip from Cincinnati to Moscow,” said the 22-year old Guto after his team’s 2-1 (18-21, 21-13, 15-12) qualification tournament win in 41 minutes over Yury Bogatov and Maksim Hudyakov of Russia.  “Yes, I think we started slow due to the travel and arriving at the hotel last night at 9 p.m. (local time).  We were glad not to be playing at 9 a.m. today.”

Playing in the second “big” event on the 2015-2016 FIVB World Tour calendar after failing to qualify for the Rio Grand Slam on iconic Copacabana in mid-March, the eighth-seeded Saymon and Guto will meet ninth-seeded Martins Plavins and Haralds Regza of Latvia for a spot in Wednesday’s opening “money” rounds.

Plavins, who captured the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games with Janis Smedins, and Regza advanced to the final qualifying round Tuesday by defeating 24th-seeded Mykola Babich and Iaroslav Gordieiev of Ukraine 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) in 34 minutes.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the second-time this season that the two teams have met in a FIVB World Tour qualifier as Saymon and Guto …
