Nearly halfway to DiMaggio’s record, JBJ chasing history

One more hit, and Jackie Bradley Jr. will be halfway to history. The Red Sox outfielder enters today’s matchup against the Rockies at Fenway Park with a 27-game hitting streak, almost half the way to Joe DiMaggio’s Major League record of 56 games, set nearly 75 years ago.
DiMaggio’s streak ran from May 15 through July 16, 1941.
To this day, the closest any hitter has come to replicating that feat is 44 games, which Pete Rose did for the Reds in 1979.

And while Bradley has a ways to go to catch DiMaggio, if he extends his hitting streak to 28 games, he’ll be just the 15th player since the turn of the century to get that far. Here’s a look at other some facts and figures regarding Bradley’s pursuit of DiMaggio’s record:
• Since DiMaggio’s streak ended on July 15, 1941, 46 players have had hitting streaks of 28 games or better. Rose’s 44 is the longest, while the Dodgers’ Jimmy Rollins owns the longest streak among active players at 38, set from 2005-06 with the Phillies.
