Jason Heyward nearing a return as Cubs ‘dodged a bullet’

ST. LOUIS — The Chicago Cubs continue to get good news regarding the progress of right fielder Jason Heyward, who’s been out the last few days with a contusion on his right side after making a diving catch on Friday against the San Francisco Giants.
Heyward left that game and hasn’t played since but was taking swings on Monday, both in the cage and during the Cubs’ batting practice. When asked if he could play in the three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals this week, he didn’t hesitate.
“We’ll see what they say,” Heyward said of team doctors. “If it was up to me, yes.”
