Joseph, Howard both able to start in Detroit

DETROIT — First baseman Tommy Joseph earned his first trip to the Major Leagues on May 13 after four years in the Phillies’ system. But it’s been difficult for manager Pete Mackanin to find playing time for him, even with Ryan Howard struggling at the plate.
With the Phils at Comerica Park for an Interleague series, Joseph got the nod at first base Monday against the Tigers, while Howard started at designated hitter. That is the expected lineup throughout the three-game series.
Joseph entered Monday 4-for-16 (.250) with one home run since getting called up. Howard was hitting .161 with eight home runs …
