Defending French champ Wawrinka avoids upset

PARIS — Stan Wawrinka came dangerously close to becoming the first defending French Open champion in 48 years of Open era tennis to go out in the first round.
Wawrinka rallied to defeat Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on a rainy Monday at Roland Garros.
Defending champions have been brought down in the second round in the past. Juan Carlos Ferrero, who was then the defending champion, lost in the second round in 2004.
