Noah Syndergaard gem masks Mets’ continued offensive troubles

NEW YORK — The situation is hardly dire for the New York Mets, not with Noah Syndergaard pitching the way he is, and not when they’re coming off a three-game weekend sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.
But are they ever going to score a few runs?
That question feels more relevant than ever, especially given the way the Mets talked about first baseman Lucas Duda after Sunday’s 3-1 victory against the Brewers. While they haven’t put Duda on the disabled list yet with the back condition that sidelined him this weekend, it certainly seemed like it was only a matter of time until they did so.
“I’m real concerned, no question,” said manager Terry Collins, who had heard the initial test results on Duda but wouldn’t yet discuss them. “I’m really concerned that this is going to keep this guy out for a while, but that’s just me. I’m not the doctor.”
Duda saw a doctor Sunday, but he’ll be re-evaluated Monday by Dr. David Altchek, the Mets’ team physician.
Already the Mets are preparing for life without him.
“Hopefully we can hold down the fort while he’s gone,” David Wright said. “Certainly, we’re going to miss him, because he’s a special talent. In the interim, we’ve got to find a way to get it done without him.”
