Hosts Great Britain Nail Their Finish To London2016 With Twin Medley Relay Golds

Great Britain‘s medley relay quartets delivered a fairytale ending to seven days of tough racing without rest for the hosts, both men and women dominating their finals from lanes 2 and 6 and providing a hint of strength hidden in the depths of a focus on Rio 2016 that took the edge off speed for many this week.
The twin-gold finale started with a fine 59.82 lead split from Kathleen Dawson, an 18-year-old on 1:01 at Olympic trials a month ago and out of the frame for Rio. She handed over to three who will fly down to Brazil for battle: Chloe Tutton clocked 1:06.94 on breaststroke to hand over to Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and a 57.69 on butterfly, before Fran Halsall, silver in the bag in the dash at the start of the session, was cheers home by a rafters-raising crown, her 54.12 delivering gold in 3:58.57.
It was 10 years ago that Halsall made her Britain senior debut, holding off a world-record-form Britta Steffen for gold in the medley relay. She celebrated with Dawson, another with a fine career ahead, as a Target Tokyo 2020 teamster.
The silver went to Italy in 4:00.73, the bronze to Finland in 4:01.49. Speaking for the British women, O’Connor said:
