Yuliya Efimova Must Face FINA Doping Panel Before Any CAS Hearing, Says Intl Fed

FINA has denied Russian reports that suggested this week that Yuliya Efimova‘s latest doping case will go straight to a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing, bypassing the FINA Doping Panel.
Head of the Russian swimming federation Vladimir Salnikov, a member of the FINA Bureau, said this week that Efimova’s case would not go directly to CAS.
However, in a statement today, the international swimming federation makes clear that it is following due process: the May 30 hearing of the Efimova Meldonium case will proceed on May 30. Only after that may the athlete take the matter to CAS if judgment goes against her and she wishes to appeal.
The FINA statement follows criticism that the federation had failed to provide clarity when Russian reports citing Efimova’s agent confirmed that she was free to train and race again.
FINA this week lifted the temporary suspension it had imposed on Efimova on the advice of the World Anti-Doping Authority, which is conducting tests into how long Meldonium may survive in the body after consumption. The substance, a heart treatment, was placed on the banned list from January 1 this year.
After FINA’s lifting of the suspension – which allows Efimova to train on and compete, at least until the matter is resolved – Russian Sports minister Vitaly Mutko gave his backing to the swimmer who has fallen foul of anti-doping rules, saying that he was “happy for Yuliya”. At a time …
