Jesse Lingard fired Manchester United to FA Cup glory with an extra-time winner against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Juan Mata had cancelled out Jason Puncheon’s opener and, despite United having Chris Smalling sent off for a second bookable offence, Lingard produced a fine volley to clinch the silverware.

Van Gaal delivers silverware

“The manager of Manchester United and the fans of Manchester United can be proud,” Louis van Gaal said in his post-match press conference. The Dutchman was quick to point out this is now the fourth major domestic cup he’s won across Europe – he has also lifted the equivalent trophies in Germany, Spain and the Netherlands – and Saturday’s success was a timely boost after United missed out on Champions League qualification in the Premier League.

News Jose Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes will be flying to Manchester early next week to negotiate a deal for the Portuguese manager to take over as United boss broke just as Van Gaal entered his press conference but he was in no mood to discuss his future, instead eager to celebrate his trophy success.

This is United’s first FA Cup in 12 years and the first major silverware won since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. After a frustrating campaign which saw the club fall short in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and Capital One Cup it is also an important moment for under-fire Van Gaal. It may not be enough to save his job but it does provide him with reward for his efforts.

Lingard the hero

Step off the bench and score a stunning volley in extra time to win the FA Cup at Wembley – Manchester United academy graduate Jesse Lingard lived out his boyhood dream on Saturday. And what a volley it was.

The ball fell kindly for the 23-year-old but he met it crisply with his right foot and rifled it into the top corner with just 10 minutes of extra time remaining.
