Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki had the race in his grip from go to a third successive gold in 1:55.98. The two times a world-titles podium placer is the first to win the crown three times since Russia’s Vladimir Selkov got his hand to the wall ahead of the rest in 1995 after wins in 1993 and 1991.

The silver went to Takov Toumarkin (ISR) in 1:56.97, the bronze to Danas Rapsys (LTU) in 1:57.22.

Our in 26.95, Rapsys closest at 27.15, the defending champion pressed ahead to a 565.84 as the half-way turn and drove off the way more than a second – and a body length – ahead, Toumarkin now closest, the podium order in place. Another half-second gain was logged down the third lap, Kawecki turning in 1:25.61, the weight in his arms leaving him battling in the home stretch for a 30.61 to the wall that was fifth best last lap.

The champion anew emerged from the race to say: “It was an easy win: the time is not that good but I’m pleased with my preparations for the Olympic Games – that’s what this year is about.”
