ATP NICE and GENEVA: Thiem defends his Nice title, finishing strong against Zverev. First home crown for Wawrinka

1st seed Dominic Thiem has won his 6th ATP title, successfully defending the crown he won 12 months ago here in Nice after beating his good friend and doubles partner Alexander Zverev by 6-4 3-6 6-0. It was rather strange match, with both players miles from their best tennis, with no less than 10 breaks in total. Zverev, playing in his first ATP final (could have become the first teenager with ATP crown since August 2008) was off to a better start, breaking Thiem in game 3 to build a 3-1 lead. He couldn’t keep that level for too long, though, like in virtually every match he plays, letting Dominic get back on the scoreboard and the Austrian eventually took the first set 6-4, grabbing the last 4 games including a double break in games 8 and 10.
