James Anderson continued his Headingley renaissance with the wickets of both Sri Lanka’s openers on the third morning of the first Test, but a gritty show of resistance from the 21-year-old Kusal Mendis meant that England were forced to play the waiting game after enforcing the follow-on.
By the time a rain shower swept in to force an early lunch, Mendis had rattled along to 47 not out from 55 balls, an innings of skill and application from a player held in high esteem by Kumar Sangakkara, among other fine judges of the game, and already his highest score in four Tests to date.
