Cardinals continue to whiff against left-handed pitching

ST. LOUIS — Teams like the St. Louis Cardinals spend a lot of time — and often money — trying to balance their rosters and ensure against lopsided platoon disadvantages.
For example, general manager John Mozeliak cited a glut of right-handed-hitting Cardinals outfielders as one of the reasons Jeremy Hazelbaker won a recent roster-spot faceoff with Tommy Pham. The fact Jedd Gyorko bats right-handed added to his allure when the Cardinals were talking about a trade with the San Diego Padres last winter. They were already two deep at some positions with lefty-hitting infielders.
