Smith to get second opinion on sore elbow

BOSTON — Side-winding reliever Carson Smith, who pitched just three times in his two weeks on the active roster, was placed back on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with recurring soreness in his right elbow.
Smith underwent an MRI on Friday and will see Dr. David Altchek in New York for a second opinion on Monday.
“We’re still in the process of gathering information,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell after Friday’s 4-2 loss to the Indians.
Prior to the game, Farrell was optimistic that the injury won’t require surgery.
“I would be surprised given what we know right now,” said Farrell.
To replace Smith on the roster, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Noe Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket.
