Sore elbow lands Smith on disabled list

BOSTON — Side-winding reliever Carson Smith, who pitched just three times in his two weeks on the active roster, was placed back on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with recurring soreness in his right elbow.
Smith underwent an MRI on Friday, and the Red Sox will have a better idea of what his recovery time will be once those results are interpreted by the doctors.
At this point, manager John Farrell is optimistic that the injury won’t require surgery.
“I would be surprised given what we know right now,” said Farrell.
To replace Smith on the roster, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Noe Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket.
