World champion and record holder Sarah Sjostrom heads to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as the title favourite in the 100m butterfly after a 55.89 championship-record victory this evening.
Out in 26.31 she had the company of defending champion Jeanette Ottesen (DEN), on 26.39, the second swiftest back home, too, at 30.44, but unable to cope with a 29.58 maelstrom from Sjostrom on her way to a third title of the week after wins over 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle. The bronze returned to its Berlin 2014 owner, Ilaria Bianchi (ITA) in 57.52.
Another sub-56 and the fourth best of all four of them, topping a staggering statistic: Sjostrom, coached by Carl Jenner in Stockholm, now owns 16 of the best 25 two-lap butterfly swims in history, just two of them dating back to the 2009 shiny suits crisis. Every one of those 16 swims is swifter than the 56.61 in which Inge de Bruin sent shockwaves winging out around the world of ‘flyers for Olympic gold in world-record time at Sydney 2000.

The standard would survive nine years until Sjostrom in shiny suit in the semis at the Rome circus clocked 56.44 in semis on her way to a boiling 56.06 victory and maiden world title. All that just a year after she first claimed European gold as a 14-year-old left screaming in delight in the momentary silence that followed a 58.44 breakthrough.
Sjostrom and the clock have come a long way these past eight years: the world crown won in 2009, regained in 2013, retained in 2015; the European title retained in 2010, undefended in 2012 on the way to a frustrating fourth behind Dana Vollmer and a then pioneering sub-56, the there world record of 55.98 in this same London pool, followed by a silver lining 0.01sec adrift Ottesen’s 56.51 in 2014 – and now a title regained.
A hand shy of her world record of 55.64, today’s clocking in that same lane 4 in which Vollmer raced, was the latest entry on an all-time ranking list swamped by the Swedish ace.

Take the final today and the semi yesterday and Sjostrom now owns seven out of 10 swiftest performances.
Vollmer, heading to USA Olympic trials in late June a mum on the comeback trail, is the only other to have cracked 56sec over two laps butterfly.
