Usain Bolt runs 9.98 at Golden Spike meet

Usain Bolt clocked his first sub-10 time of the season as he ran away as clear winner at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava on Friday (May 20).
The Jamaican six-time Olympic champion had suggested he was in 9.8 form before the race at the IAAF World Challenge meeting, but crossed the line with a grimace of frustration across his face as the clock showed 9.99 before being rounded down to 9.98 for a season’s best.
The world record-holder got out of the blocks well but took until around the 50-metre mark before opening up a characteristically big lead and crossing the line clear of Barbadian Ramon Gittens (10.21) in second and Iran’s Hassan Taftian (10.25) in third.
Decathlon Olympic and world champion Ashton Eaton was due to start the race but withdrew with a hamstring complaint after finishing fourth in the long jump earlier in the day; a competition won by Germany’s Paralympic champion Markus Rehm with 8.13m as he solidified his status among the very best long jumpers in the world.
James Ellington continued his impressive start to his 2016 season as he won the 200m in 20.35 – just 0.04 off his lifetime best set in April.
