Terry Venables hopes the class of 2016 can go one better than his heroes of 20 years ago and offer the country another ‘summer of a lifetime’.
The former Tottenham and Barcelona boss was in charge of England when they lost to Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 96 at Wembley.
Gareth Southgate’s penalty heartache ended the country’s interest in the tournament which the Germans, who converted all six spot kicks in the shootout, won with a 2-1 extra-time victory over the Czech Republic.
Venables, who left his post with the national team to take up a similar role with Australia later that year, was speaking at the Three Lions pub in London launching Carlsberg’s ‘Pubstitutions’ campaign.
