European Championships

London, Day 5 Heats

Adam Peaty became the first man in the world inside 27sec in the heats of the 50m breaststroke at the London Aquatics Centre this morning, while Federica Pellegrini put in a call to those who guard her vault – make space for another crown.

Pellegrini (ITA) took a stroke towards what would be a record fourth European 200m freestyle crown with a 1:57.96 in heats that went with an empty lane marked “Sarah Sjostrom DNS”.

Sjostrom, fastest 200m freestyler at world titles last year with her relay lead-off and on 1:55.30 for a 200m championship record yesterday leading Sweden’s 4×200 quartet, is making a habit of setting the fastest pace over four laps at major meets but then bypassing the battle proper.

Pellegrini holds records galore over 200m freestyle, including the world record of 1:52.98 from a time of shiny suits in 2009. Since 2004, when she claimed Olympic silver at Athens 2004, Pellegrini has assmbled the finest collection of 200m jewelw in the sport, incliding Olympic …
