Mets to consider skipping Harvey’s next start

NEW YORK — The Mets hoped Thursday would be the night Matt Harvey began figuring things out. Instead, their one-time ace left a 9-1 loss to the Nationals so shaken that he may not make his next start.
Harvey lasted a career-low 2 2/3 innings and gave up a career-high nine runs (six earned) at Citi Field, forcing the Mets to face the possibility that he needs more than just a small mechanical fix.
“When you see confidence as banged up as his is right now, that means it needs to get fixed,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.
Collins suggested Harvey could see a doctor, but the pitcher said once again he feels nothing wrong physically. The manager wouldn’t commit to pitching Harvey next week in Washington.
“We’re going to take a look,” Collins said. “Is that best for him? Is that best for us?”
Harvey has struggled all season, and his 5.77 ERA shows it. Harvey’s career ERA going into this year was 2.53.
But after he gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings last Friday in Colorado, Harvey and pitching coach Dan Warthen worked on adjustments they believed would help. Thursday afternoon, Warthen predicted that Harvey would pitch well against the Nationals.
