‘Frustrated’ Spieth still shoots 64

IRVING, Texas — Jordan Spieth wanted to work on one aspect of his game at this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson, the hometown event that he first started attending as a toddler.
Coming off a missed cut at the Players Championship, this had nothing to do with his driving accuracy or his wedge game or even an uncharacteristically balky putter that had repeatedly failed him for two rounds last week.
Instead, Spieth wanted to improve upon the mental part of his game. He wanted to keep himself from getting too negative inside the ropes, from dwelling too much on the poor shots and missed putts.
That was a difficult proposition during Thursday’s opening round.
“[It was] really almost a two-way miss today,” he admitted afterward. “It’s frustrating.”
Here’s the part where we need to reveal the day’s most significant fact: Spieth posted seven birdies in a 6-under 64 that left him just 1 stroke shy of the lead.
