Astros happy to get Gattis back behind plate

CHICAGO — For the first time since Sept. 28, 2014, when he was in the final days of his tenure with the Braves, Houston’s Evan Gattis put on the catcher’s gear and crouched behind the plate in a Major League game. Gattis, who has been preparing to catch for months, was behind the plate with right-hander Collin McHugh on the mound for Thursday’s series finale against the White Sox.
“It’ll be good to get him back there after all this work and curiosity about it,” said Astros manager A.J. Hinch, a former catcher who tutored Gattis, before the game. “He’s done his work in Double-A to get himself back acclimated to catching.”
Gattis, who caught for the Braves in 2013-14, was used primarily as a designated hitter by the Astros in his first year with Houston last year. The club wanted him to get back behind the plate in the spring, but he underwent sports hernia surgery on Feb. 9 and missed all of spring camp.
Gattis joined the Astros shortly after the start of this season and played in 20 games …
