Home-Alone Gold For Mie Nielsen 58.7CR Over Hosszu; & Bronze For Young Dawson

European Championships
London, Day 4 Finals
Mie Nielsen, 20, and Katinka Hosszu, 27, shared gold two years ago in 59.63. The Dane got the better of the Hungarian today 58.73, a championship record, to 58.94. The winner matched the 2016 world rankings topper of World champion Emily Seebohm (AUS).
Nielsen was out in 28.61, Hosszu in 29.06 before fighting back with a 29.88 home-comer that could not claw back the feint to the Dane, a 30.12 good for gold home alone. The bronze went to a British Target Tokyo 2010 teen almost 10 years Hosszu’s junior, Kathleen Dawson, on a career high of 59.68.
Nielsen, coached by Eyleifur Jóhannesson in Aalborg, nailed it in two key ways: she attacked the race and then relied on that speed and a greater efficiency of stroke that her rival to negate Hosszu’s power play. The crown had been a long time coming.
Mia is the daughter of Olympic silver medallist Benny Nielsen (200m butterfly, 1988 Olympics in Seoul, behind Germany’ world record holder Michael “The Albatross” Gross) and Lone Jensen, who swam for Denmark at the 1978 world titles in West Berlin. No surprise, then, that she was in the splash at 5, having followed her elder sister Anna into swimming.
