Three things we learned Wednesday

The Chicago Cubs win in extra innings, the Chicago White Sox turn another triple play, Juan Lagares makes like Willie Mays and Jackie Bradley Jr.’s hit streak is up to 24 games. Here, however, are three things we learned from Wednesday’s games:
1. Johnny Cueto is hot. The San Francisco Giants are hot. While several of the big-money free agents have struggled, Cueto has been everything the Giants have wanted, improving to 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA with his second complete game in a 2-1 win over the Padres. Following Madison Bumgarner’s outing on Tuesday, it was the first back-to-back complete games for the Giants since 2002. The Giants have won seven in a row — six of those on the road, and if they beat the Padres on Thursday, it will be their first perfect road trip of seven or more games since 1913.
Cueto has allowed just two home runs, and one key has been the return of his cutter. When he went to the Royals, the cutter suddenly stopped cutting — batters hit .345 and slugged .588 against it after his trade. While batters are hitting .296 against it this year, they haven’t hit a home run. Same thing with this changeup: He allowed an .883 OPS with the Royals, and that’s down …
