Liverpool player ratings

Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in the Europa League final despite being a goal up at half-time as the Spanish side won the trophy for a third successive year.

Daniel Sturridge’s brilliant goal just after the half-hour mark had the travelling Liverpool fans dreaming of a trophy but it wasn’t to be as Sevilla turned the game around.

Here’s how Liverpool’s players fared…

Simon Mignolet 6

Mignolet played more minutes than anyone else in this competition this season, but it’s the final 45 minutes that will stick in his memory as the Liverpool goalkeeper was helpless to prevent the turnaround. He could do little with Sevilla’s first and pulled off a good save to prevent Gameiro adding another but the third and final blow was a difficult moment. He got something on Coke’s effort but the assistant referee’s flag wasn’t the redemption he was hoping for.

Nathaniel Clyne 7

Clyne was an energetic figure early on as he worked hard to exploit the space afforded him by charging at Sergio Escudero. He crossed well for a Daniel Sturridge header, won possession well for a subsequent chance for the striker and bounded forward again to fashion two further chances in the first half alone. But Sevilla shut him down in the second half and his attacking influence faded.

Dejan Lovren 6

Lovren has been in the best form of his Liverpool career of late and was the hero in the quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, but this game didn’t go his way – booked for a hack on Kevin Gameiro early on and nutmegged for the second goal. In between he produced a series of good clearances and thought he’d helped put Liverpool two ahead only to see an offside flag.

Kolo Toure 7

The likeable Ivorian battled manfully before being taken off for Christian Benteke late on. It was a strong display by the 35-year-old as he gamely dealt with Gameiro – making more …
