Notes: Shumenov to defend interim belt Saturday night

A few notes from around the boxing world:
Beibut Shumenov (16-2, 10 KOs) will defend his interim cruiserweight belt for the first time when he meets Chicago’s Junior Wright (15-1-1, 12 KOs) on Saturday night at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The fight will be on the Erislandy Lara-Vanes Martirosyan Showtime-televised card but won’t be part of the telecast. Former light heavyweight world titleholder Shumenov, 32, a native of Kazakhstan living in Las Vegas, won the vacant interim belt by competitive decision against B.J. Flores in July. Flores (31-2-1, 20 KOs), 37, of Phoenix, is also on the card and will be fighting for the first time since the loss to Shumenov. He will face Mexico’s Robeto Santos (12-3, 5 KOs) in a six-round heavyweight bout.
