W2W4: Pittsburgh Penguins at Tampa Bay Lightning, Game 3

TAMPA, Fla. — Momentum is up for grabs in the Eastern Conference finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning. The series is tied at 1-1 with Game 3 at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday at Amalie Arena.

After the Lightning won Game 1, the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby scored only 40 seconds into overtime to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 win in Game 2. The Penguins are hoping they can build off that momentum on the road.

“I thought we generated a lot more [in Game 2] and we want to build off of that,” Crosby said. “We also know they’re going to be pretty fired up to be at home and expect a big push from that. So just understanding that, but also try to make sure we kind of build on the momentum we had there in the third period and overtime.”

That won’t be easy in this building. Here’s what to watch for in Game 3.

Malkin-Crosby reunited?: Before his game-winning overtime goal in Game 2, Crosby had gone eight games without a goal and he now hopes they come in bunches. Teammate Evgeni Malkin has gone seven straight playoff games without a goal, his longest scoring drought in a single postseason. In order to generate scoring, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan tweaked his line combinations numerous times during Game 2 and that included pairing Crosby and Malkin for a few shifts. Without divulging his Game 3 game plan, Sullivan said he would consider putting those two together again.
