M1500 Free: Gregorio Paltrinieri 14:34.04 Euro Record Traces Sun’s WR Trajectory

European Championships
London, Day 3 Finals
The next battle will be a bigger one with more tension in the water but Gregorio Paltrinieri will head to Rio as a man with Olympic gold in his sights and a fine memory of last time out: 14:34.04 via a 7:46.24 at the 800m mark. The time is faster than Grant Hackett‘s 2001 stomping standard and second swiftest ever after the 14:31.02 world record of Sun Yang*, the Chinese Olympic champion.
Italy celebrated twice as Paltrinieri leapt on to the lane rope for his NBA signature shrug (main image): training partner Gabriele Detti took silver in 14:48.75, the bronze to Ukraine’s Mykhalo Romanchuk in 14:50.33.
At 1200m and 1300m marks, Paltrineri raced inside Sun Yang’s world-record pace for the first time. The last 100m – the Chinese swimmer having produced a staggering last two laps at London 2012 – saw the Italian fall off that pace as he raced in lane 4 of the London Aquatics Centre where Sun claimed the world record and Olympic gold back at London 2012 before his fall from grace, a doping offence the most relevant of those in sporting terms.
Paltrinieri emerged from battle with the clock sporting a beaming smile and said:
“First of all, this time is incredible. I can’t believe that I was able to swim so fast here today as I’ve been working so hard in training. This is great for my confidence because my goal is gold in Rio.”
More soon on the race that was over, as far as the battle with others went, from the 400m mark. First up, the world rankings and some splits to ponder:
