Mie Nielsen Keen To Split Difference, 59.26CR; No Rio 200 But Murdoch Will Race Koch

Mie Nielsen (DEN) and Katinka Hosszu (HUN) shared gold in the 100m backstroke at Berlin 2014. They don’t want to do it again, as the heats at the London Aquatics Centre proved this morning.

The Dane established a championship record of 59.26 without a pant to follow before watching Hosszu challenge with a 59.38. The gap was a bit each way: 29,19 out, 30.07 back for Nielsen; 29.23 and 30.15 for Hosszu, who nailed her finish. The semis will provide no great challenger for either in terms of qualifying for the moment that will, the showdown a day later.

Closest to the top two going into semis are Brit Target Tokyo 2020 teamster Kathleen Dawson, 1:00.60, Slovakia’s Katarina Listopadova, 1:00.78, Turkey’s Ekaterina Avramova, 1:00.82, and British champion Georgia Davies, 1:00.84.

Hosszu had already qualified for her first semi of the day by the time she raced a second time on backstroke. In 200IM heats, the world champion and record holder clocked 2:11.55. That would have left her just over a second outside her all-time best in the last Olympic year but these days 2:11 is a breeze for a woman faster than self and shiny suits on 2:06.12 for the world title and record in Kazan last year.

Next through were Britain’s Hannah Miley, 2:12.43, and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, 2:12.76. They were followed through to semis by a rush of 2:13s, led by Carlotta Toni (ITA), with Evelyn Verraszto keeping Zsuzsanna Jakabos out of the count of Hungarian qualifiers, and …
