Smith tests knee with fielding practice

MILWAUKEE — Brewers reliever Will Smith, attempting a non-surgical comeback from a torn ligament in his right knee, participated in pitchers’ fielding practice Tuesday in another significant test. After covering first base and practicing pickoffs with no issues, Smith took part in agility drills in the outfield.

He is scheduled for an extended, 45-pitch bullpen session Wednesday that includes a break in the middle to simulate pitching multiple innings. If Smith passes that test, he would face hitters next. After that, he could be cleared for a Minor League rehabilitation assignment.
