‘Next 48 hours’ key in A-Rod’s return from DL

PHOENIX — The Yankees are planning to activate Alex Rodriguez from the 15-day disabled list for Thursday’s game against the Athletics in Oakland, but the 40-year-old designated hitter sounds less than certain that he will be ready to step into the lineup.
Rodriguez was scheduled to hit on the field for the second straight day on Tuesday, and he could run the bases on Wednesday, testing his strained right hamstring. Rodriguez has jogged on the grass, but he’s not running close to full speed, according to manager Joe Girardi.
“The next 48 hours will be big,” Rodriguez said. “Until you get cleats on and turn bases, that’s the biggest challenge.”
Rodriguez sustained what the Yankees called a “Grade 1-plus” strain while running to first base in a 4-1 loss on May 3 in Baltimore.
