To shave or not to shave? Coach Mel Marshall will decide, said World champion Adam Peaty after a 58.74 in semi-finals of the 100m breaststroke last night, unshaven, unrested and the defence of the European title ahead of him.

There are 32 sub-59sec performances in swimming history, 24 among six men if you count only textile suits. Peaty’s are all textile and they number 11, his 58.94 from heats yesterday morning No 10 on his all-time list and matching the time in which he made his 2014 breakthrough for the Commonwealth crown a month before adding continental gold in 58.96.

Such times are becoming matter-of-course for Peaty, who last year set a 57.92 world record to ape the world-record pace of Johnny Tarzan Weissmuller on freestyle in the 1920s. Then there was a 58.18 in semis at world titles on the way to a soaring recovery from an overly big first-lap deficit to Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) in a final that ended 58.52 to 58.59 in favour of the man with the Midas Touch on breaststroke these past two years. That 58.52 was a match of his first-round speed, the fastest heats time ever, all suits.
