Yankees’ Chad Green gamble comes up snake eyes

PHOENIX — The New York Yankees did not have to promote Chad Green to start Monday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Even with Luis Severino on the disabled list, they could have stayed on rotation and pitched Michael Pineda in the opener of the three-game series, Nathan Eovaldi on Tuesday and Ivan Nova, just re-inserted into the rotation, on Wednesday, all on a normal five-day schedule.
But manager Joe Girardi wanted to give his starters an extra day of rest, and so it was decided that starting Green against the Diamondbacks, who came in with an abysmal 5-16 record at home, would be a safe bet.
