Richards opts for alternative to Tommy John surgery

LOS ANGELES — Angels starter Garrett Richards, nursing a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, will try to avoid season-ending Tommy John surgery by undergoing what general manager Billy Eppler called “the conservative care route.”

Instead of surgery, Richards will initially undergo stem-cell therapy, which is similar to the route taken by rotation mate Andrew Heaney, who underwent a platelet-rich plasma injection in his left elbow a couple of weeks ago.

Richards will be shut down for at least six weeks, then be re-evaluated.

The 27-year-old right-hander made six starts this year, posting a 2.34 ERA, then was diagnosed with a high-grade tear of his UCL. At that point, surgery …
