South Africa edge Zimbabwe in Olympic build-up

The biting cold and rainy conditions at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa could not keep the scores of fans from the South African township from enjoying the end-to-end action as South Africa edged Zimbabwe 1-0 in a friendly match played on Sunday. Both teams used the occasion to test their mettle as they gear up to represent the continent at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil in August.
The home side came into the match at the back of a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Botswana in the final match of 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The match proved to be nothing like the barren draw in the last meeting between the two sides, as both were looking for positive results ahead of their trips to Brazil. However, a soaked Makhulong Stadium pitch made it difficult for both teams to get into their usual passing game.
The first chance at goal was in the 35th minute Banyana Banyana’s Lindiwe Sibiya squandered a golden opportunity to give the home side the lead following a decent cross that found her unmarked in the box, but fired her shot well off target.
