Nathan Adrian (100 Free: 48.29) & Cal Bears Continue To Roll At Atlanta Classic

Stagnant for some time in the 100 freestyle, Nathan Adrian broke out of his semi-slump last month when he went 48-flat at the Mesa stop of the USA Swimming Pro Series. Although his performance on Sunday night at the Atlanta Classic wasn’t quite as quick, it was nonetheless another solid step toward next month’s United States Olympic Trials in Omaha.
The reigning Olympic champion in the 100 free, Adrian won his signature event in 48.29, defeating Brazilian Marcelo Chierighini (48.69). Adrian had a narrow advantage over Chierighini at the midway point of the race, 22.91 to 22.96, but Adrian had the strength over the last 50 meters to record a victory of nearly a half-second.
The win was the second of the weekend for Adrian, who also prevailed in the 50 free with a sub-22 effort. While the time is not going to make Australian frontrunner Cameron McEvoy shake in his Speedo, Adrian has not only been consistent in his tuneup events, but also quick enough that discounting him from a possible defense would be unwise.
