Sporting Gijon survived relegation from La Liga on the final day of the season after securing a magnificent 2-0 victory over Villarreal.

Sporting leapfrogged Getafe in the standings following their 2-1 defeat to Real Betis to claim the final remaining safety spot, as relegation was confirmed for Rayo Vallecano and the Madrid strugglers. 

With Levante’s spot in the second tier already cemented, it was left for three times to squabble over two relegation positions with Sporting escaping demotion after goals from Jony and Sergio Alvarez.

Meanwhile in the individual charts, the Pichichi Trophy was already wrapped up with Luis Suarez claiming the award after netting a match and title-winning treble against lowly Granada to take his total for the season to 40.

Sporting pulled off a shock victory over UEFA Champions League qualifiers Villarreal at Estadio El Molinon on Sunday to move away from danger in the final round of fixtures.

It took just seven minutes for creative force Jony to calm the nerves of the hosts, as he rifled in a superb volley from the edge of the box following a fine ball into the area from Carlos Carmona from the right wing. 

The 24-year-old has been a standout player throughout Sporting’s campaign and deservedly inked his name on the scoresheet with a well-taken strike to enthuse the home supporters.

Sergio Alvarez smashed in a second goal of the game with 10 minutes to play to secure all three points and ensure Gijon remain in the top flight.
