What are the fears that players must overcome before and during tennis matches?

The fear of losing is the greatest fear most players have before starting a match. The fear of losing rankings, disappointing one”s coach or family and the fear of losing to someone not as skilled as themselves or of playing poorly can wreak havoc on a player. All players know that in order to wink they can”t think negatively. They have to have confidence in themselves on playing the best game they can and to deal with the results. This might be the reason why some players do not want to know who they play next. It really puts thoughts in their heads as to how well a player plays as compared to their own skill. It”s scary and that scared feeling can make any player “choke up” and not show those wonderful strokes and playing styles they may have displayed in practice. Some players even have the fear of hitting that routine overhead or extreme crosscourts because they have had trouble doing it in practice.

Tennis players that are usually “qualifiers” should be accustomed to losing and having less fears than a player ranked in the top 20s. They”ve gotten used to losing week after week, tournament after tournament so they probably feel–what is one more lost; yet they are also fearful of winning; of qualifying for more tournaments, to play stronger players that have more consistent wins than themselves.
