Jhonny Peralta’s return could boost Cardinals defense

LOS ANGELES — The St. Louis Cardinals knew they would miss Jhonny Peralta, but they didn’t know that his glove would leave the biggest void.
Peralta never has been a flashy shortstop and has never garnered much Gold Glove consideration in his 13 major league seasons. But he has a steadying influence on the Cardinals’ defense, which has been anything but steady in 2016. The Cardinals have 33 errors, most in the majors. The advanced metrics aren’t much kinder. The Cardinals rank 29th out of 30 teams in UZR.
