Chris Sale vs. Luis Severino: Ace against future ace?

NEW YORK — Chicago White Sox lefty Chris Sale and Yankees righty Luis Severino don’t have a lot in common, except talent. Sale, a 6-foot-6 Floridian, is an ace, while Severino, a 6-foot-2 Dominican, may be a future one.
The two face each other Friday night in the Bronx, pitting a starter who is mastering his trade against one struggling to find his way. Not coincidentally, one is on a first-place team, the other is on a last-place club.
Sale, 27, is 7-0 with a 1.79 ERA, while Severino, five years younger, is 0-5 with a 6.12 ERA. Out of 53 qualified AL pitchers, Sale is in the top five in WHIP, ERA and opposing batting average, while Severino is in the bottom five in the latter two categories.
At the moment, it looks like a mismatch. Severino is trying to discover himself on the mound, while Sale is pitching like a virtuoso.
“He’s fun to watch because he is so different from outing to outing,” said Yankees setup man Andrew Miller, whose style is somewhat similar to Sale’s, though Sale throws more across his body. …
