Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was feeling proud of himself and why not?
He did something hard to do in boxing — he got a deal done for the two best fighters in the world at 140 pounds, Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol, to meet to unify their world titles and he was jovial in announcing it on Tuesday at a news conference in Beverly Hills, California.
“Not only are they two champions, they’re both undefeated and without any question the two best 140-pounders around today,” Arum crowed. “That’s why I’m so excited about this fight. When the best fight the best — and it’s clearly, in this division, the best fighting the best — the public will respond.”
Arum hopes the public responds because he needs fight fans to pony up $49.99 to watch the card on HBO PPV on July 23 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He would have preferred to have HBO buy the fight for the network but a budget crunch made that impossible. No use complaining about something out of his hands, Arum said. So the choice came down to this — put the fight on pay-per-view or don’t do the fight.
Arum, who has an obligation to keep these guys active, elected to give it his best shot and see if he can sell the 75,000 buys he says he needs to at least break even.
