Rory learned to close by beating Tiger in 2012

“Is Rory McIlroy a closer?” is a question up there with others in sports like, “Is Joe Flacco elite” and “Can Kevin Durant and Steph Curry survive a NBA schedule?”
But still, the front-running McIlroy has made a name for himself by torching fields. He said he still didn’t believe he knew how to shut down an event until the 2012 Honda Classic when he held off a 62 from Tiger Woods and took over the No. 1 spot in the world.
“At the start of ’12, whenever I needed to sort of hold on on the back nine at the Honda Classic,” said McIlroy. “Tiger had shot 62. I was trying to get in the clubhouse and become world No. 1 for the first time. That’s when I really believed, okay, I’ve … finally I’ve been able to close a tournament out and be able to play the right shot at the right time and keep it together. That was probably the first time.”
