A transcontinental transfer for 2018 Giro?

Media reports in Italy suggest that the Giro d’Italia is close to a deal to start the 2018 edition in Japan. Yes, you read that right: Japan.
After years of dreaming of a grand tour beyond the realm of Europe, including rumored departures in North America, the Caribbean, and Middle East, RCS Sport could be close to making it a reality.
According to reports in the Italian newspaper La Stampa, the Giro entourage would arrive in Japan for four stages, and possibly include a climbing stage up the flanks of Mount Fuji. There was no official confirmation Wednesday, but Giro boss Mauro Vegni told VeloNews earlier this week the race is considering all options when it comes to taking the Italian grand tour to new markets.
