Velasco on board until 2020: Argentina out to join the best teams in the world

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 11, 2016 – Argentina’s volleyballers secured their ticket to the Olympic Games in Rio back in October last year. As a result, the FIVB Volleyball World League is the perfect preparation for the highlight of the season this August – particularly as star coach Julio Velasco’s team are in Intercontinental Group 1, meaning the Argentinean players can test themselves against the best teams in the world. This represents another step towards establishing themselves among the very best in the world, which is Velasco’s goal between now and 2020. Despite still having time to run, the coach’s contract has been extended.”We are very excited that Julio will continue, and of course we have the support of the entire leadership of Argentina,” said Argentine Volleyball Federation President Juan Antonio Gutierrez. “The intention was to have a working cycle with Julio Velasco up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Results have also confirmed that the team are doing the right work. The leadership has high expectations for these Olympic Games in Rio. The dedication and commitment of the players and their attitudes make us think of a great team spirit: the team comes above all else.”Argentina are intent on proving that in the FIVB World League. This year’s competition includes a trip to the Olympic city of Rio de Janeiro where the Gauchos will face FIVB World Cup winners USA, Olympic hosts Brazil, and Iran. The following two weekends of pool matches include contests against world champions Poland, last year’s FIVB World League winners France, London Olympic champions Russia, FIVB World Cup runners-up Italy, last year’s FIVB World League runners-up Serbia, and Iran once again.
