Vitale: Garfinkel’s contributions helped grow college basketball

College basketball lost an important figure last week when Howard Garfinkel passed away at age 86.
He never coached a collegiate game, yet he knew as much about players and talent as anyone. He was as good a friend to college coaches all over the country. His Five-Star Basketball Camp was so influential in the development of so many young men.
Garf loved being around the sport of basketball. It was like his mistress, his lover. He had such a passion for the game and the youngsters who played it. He loved evaluating talent and telling coaches about another great player he saw.
He was also involved in the selection of players for the McDonald’s All American Game featuring the best of the best from high school. Garf was on other committees, including the Naismith …
